Jodhpur, historic capital of Marwar, was founded in 1459 by Rao Jodha on a sandstone ridge that still crowns the city — Mehrangarh, one of India’s great forts, with the old town’s blue-washed Brahmpuri lanes tumbling beneath it. At the Thar’s edge it grew rich on sandalwood, opium, dates and copper, and its merchant houses — the havelis of Mahamandir and the old Sardar Market clocktower quarter — still carry that wealth in carved stone.
Today it is Rajasthan’s workshop city: handicraft and furniture exports that furnish showrooms worldwide, the desert’s military and air-force stations, AIIMS and the university campuses, and the rail junction where Delhi, Ahmedabad and Jaipur lines meet the desert. Around it: Mandore’s cenotaph gardens, the marble wonder of Ranakpur within a drive, and Bishnoi villages where blackbuck and chinkara still roam.
