Udaipur was raised in 1559 by Udai Singh II in the Aravalli folds after Chittor fell — lakes first, city around them. Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar hold the old centre together: island palaces (Jag Mandir, Jag Niwas) shimmer between them, the City Palace runs a kilometre along the water, and Gangaur turns the old city into a procession every spring. The Rajputs built a capital that the romance-trade later nicknamed the Venice of the East.
